Which captions plugin should you use in Premiere Pro?

Premiere makes, styles and translates captions on its own; plugins add animated presets, highlighted words and emojis.

Premiere transcribes in 18 languages, puts captions on a caption track you style in the Properties panel, and since version 26.3 shows them one word at a time. AutoCut, Captioneer, Cutback and FireCut add animated styles, and each lands on your timeline differently: as native text, Motion Graphics templates or images. Our AutoReel captions a talking-head reel as part of editing it.

The AutoReel mascot, a monkey with film-reel ears and a headset, looks over caption cards on its desk with a magnifying glass: a timeline with a caption track, caption styles with one word lit, a captioned vertical reel and a transcript.

Which one fits you?

Captions land on your timeline in one of three ways: as a caption track, as editable text or graphics, or as images. That decides how you change them later.

Apps outside Premiere

Captioning somewhere else first?

These caption in their own app. What comes back into Premiere is a file: an SRT, or the styled captions burned into video.

Web app

Submagic

Animated captions in a browser. Back to Premiere as an SRT, VTT or TXT, or styled on a green or blue screen to key over your edit.

Desktop, web and phone app

CapCut

Auto captions in its own editor. They export as SRT or TXT, and it doesn’t import or export Premiere projects.

Desktop and web app

Descript

Animated captions in its editor; its Premiere XML doesn’t carry them, so you take an SRT or VTT instead.

Premiere’s own captions, step by step

Included with your Premiere subscription. The steps follow Adobe’s help.

  1. Transcribe the clip. Open the Text panel and choose Transcribe, or turn on Automatic transcription when you import. English comes with Premiere; other languages are a language-pack download, 18 in all.
  2. Create captions from the transcript. Choose Captions > Create captions from transcript. Pick a style, the caption length and whether to keep your captions in a single line or wrap it into two lines.
  3. Show one word at a time, if you like. In Premiere 26.3 or later, choose Single Word under Layout: each caption on the track holds one word, styled like the others.
  4. Style them in the Properties panel. Fill, stroke, shadow and mask with text, then save the look as a style, in the project or in a local folder.
  5. Translate them. Translate Captions makes a new caption track in another language, using cloud translation (Google Translate and Microsoft Translator). Adobe’s product page says 27 languages.
  6. Export them. Burn them into the video, or export them as an .srt sidecar file.

Highlighting the spoken word, emojis and motion presets for captions aren’t described on Adobe’s caption pages. That’s where the plugins below come in.

What AutoReel doesn’t do

Worth knowing before you pick it for captions.

The AutoReel mascot raises one hand as if taking an oath, the other hand on a red-brown manual.
  • It isn’t a captions-only plugin. It captions a talking-head reel as part of editing it: the best take, the pauses, the hook, color and sound effects come with it.
  • It doesn’t translate captions. They’re in the language you speak, one of the 38 it transcribes.
  • It doesn’t bring every graphic to older Premiere versions. Some bundled graphics need Premiere Pro 2026.
  • It doesn’t caption offline. The audio it needs is uploaded for transcription, and the transcript goes to AI services. Your video files stay on your computer.
  • It isn’t unlimited. Monthly includes 50 reels a month and Yearly 1,000 a year.
  • It isn’t out of beta. It edits reels end to end and is still improving.

Questions people ask

Plans, the trial and installing AutoReel are on the AutoReel page.

Does Premiere Pro have auto captions?

Yes. Transcribe the clip with Speech to Text, in 18 languages, then choose Captions > Create captions from transcript. The captions land on a caption track, and you style them in the Properties panel. Since version 26.3 (June 2026) Premiere can also show them one word at a time, and Translate Captions makes a caption track in another language. They’re included with your Creative Cloud membership.

Which captions plugin should I use in Premiere Pro?

Decide how you want the captions on your timeline. Captioneer puts editable Motion Graphics templates there, AutoCut a subsequence of native text and shapes, Cutback either a caption track or animated graphic clips, and FireCut styled captions as images (or a plain caption track). For captions as part of a finished talking-head reel there’s AutoReel, which we make. If you only need clean captions, Premiere’s own may be enough. The table on this page links a source for every fact.

Is there a free captions plugin for Premiere Pro?

AutoSubs is free and open source and imports its subtitles as caption tracks. Cutback, CaptionX and PremiereCopilot have free tiers with limits, and Premiere’s own captions are included with your subscription. Most paid plugins have a trial: Captioneer and AutoCut 14 days, FireCut 7.

How do I make word-by-word captions in Premiere Pro?

In Premiere 26.3 or later, choose Single Word under Layout when you create captions: each caption on the track is one word. Adobe’s pages don’t mention highlighting the spoken word or adding emojis; for those, AutoCut, Cutback, Captioneer and PremiereCopilot list word-by-word presets.

Can I edit captions from a plugin in Premiere?

It depends on how they land. A caption track or native text is edited like any Premiere caption or title. Captioneer’s Motion Graphics templates are edited in the Properties and Essential Graphics panels. FireCut’s styled captions are .PNG images, edited back in FireCut. AutoReel’s captions are Premiere graphics whose text you can edit.

Does AutoReel add captions?

Yes, as part of editing a talking-head reel: custom captions timed to your speech, as Premiere graphics with editable text. In the panel you pick the font and size, how many words show at once, the position, a highlight color for key phrases, a caption box and a pop, fade or slide animation. It isn’t a captions-only plugin. It’s $29/mo or $249/yr, with a trial of 3 days for $1 with 3 reels.

Can CapCut or Submagic captions go into Premiere?

As files, not as an editable timeline. CapCut exports captions as SRT or TXT and doesn’t exchange projects with Premiere. Submagic exports an SRT, VTT or TXT file, or its styled captions on a green or blue screen to key over your edit. Premiere turns an imported SRT into a caption track.
